South Africa's Coega Green Ammonia Project Signs $1 Billion Deal with Denmark's Topsoe

South Africa's planned green ammonia production facility in the Coega region has signed a $1 billion agreement with Danish technology company Topsoe. According to Reuters, under this agreement, Topsoe will serve as the main technology provider for the design and equipment supply of the facility. The project aims to convert green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources, into ammonia. The initiative, led by the Coega Development Corporation, seeks to contribute to South Africa's clean energy transition and achieve a competitive position in the global green ammonia market. Topsoe will utilize its proprietary ammonia synthesis technology for this project. The company has previously been involved in similar large-scale green ammonia projects, demonstrating its expertise in the field. The agreement will strengthen Topsoe's presence in South Africa while boosting renewable energy investments in the region. Green ammonia is gaining importance due to its potential to reduce carbon emissions, particularly in areas such as fertilizer production and maritime fuel. The Coega project is expected to become operational by 2026 and produce approximately 1 million tons of green ammonia annually. This production will target both local and international markets.
