EU Commission Lowers Growth Forecast: Energy Crisis Alert

The European Commission has downgraded its economic growth forecasts for the Eurozone, citing the impact of an energy crisis triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In its 'European Economic Forecasts Spring 2026' report, the Commission stated that rising energy prices are pushing up inflation and slowing economic activity. The report highlighted that the increase in energy costs is putting pressure on industrial production and household consumption, negatively affecting the Eurozone's growth expectations for 2026. The Commission also noted that uncertainties in global trade, in addition to the energy crisis, pose risks to growth. It warned that concerns over energy supply security could deepen, especially if conflicts in the Middle East persist. The report indicated that the European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy decisions will also be decisive for the growth outlook, and that steps taken to combat inflation could delay economic recovery.
