India Regulator Sanctions Seven for Social Media Stock Manipulation

India's capital market regulator has taken action against seven individuals accused of manipulating stock prices through social media platforms. According to Reuters, the regulator found that these individuals artificially inflated or deflated the prices of certain stocks by spreading misleading information on social media. The investigation revealed that the manipulative activities targeted small investors and threatened market integrity. The regulator determined that the individuals acted in a coordinated manner through social media groups and messaging apps, sharing false news and recommendations about stocks. These activities reportedly led to extreme price fluctuations, particularly in shares of low-market-capitalization companies. Authorities emphasized that such manipulations undermine investor confidence and disrupt the fair functioning of markets. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced that it will take stricter measures against manipulation cases and increase oversight of social media platforms.
