Netflix Ordered to Pay 2 Million Lira to Turkish Teacher for Copyright Infringement

Netflix has been ordered by a court to pay approximately 1.95 million lira in compensation to a mathematics teacher for unauthorized use of his content. The court ruled that the personality rights and image rights of teacher Mustafa Güler were violated. With interest, the total amount is expected to exceed 4 million lira. Güler stated that he became aware of the unauthorized use of his content in a promotional advertisement for a Netflix series after being alerted by one of his students. He initiated legal proceedings and expressed satisfaction with the favorable outcome of the case. He added that Netflix has not apologized to him. Lawyer Ömer Uğur Yanar explained that a five-member expert panel made determinations regarding the infringement and compensation during the legal process. He noted that the court ordered the payment of a total of 4.138 million lira, including material and moral damages plus interest. Yanar expressed hope that the ruling would set a precedent for anyone experiencing copyright infringement. Güler emphasized that their goal was not money but to win the case on its merits. He stated that large companies like Netflix should not use content creators' works without permission, and that this ruling serves as an important example for all content creators.
