Private equity giant Thoma Bravo has transferred software company Medallia to its lenders, marking one of the largest losses in the private equity sector in recent years. Control of Medallia will pass to a consortium led by Blackstone. Thoma Bravo acquired Medallia for approximately $6.4 billion in 2021. However, as the company's performance fell short of expectations, a restructuring of debt-laden Medallia became inevitable. This transfer represents a significant reputational loss for Thoma Bravo. The consortium led by Blackstone aims to take over Medallia's operations and turn the company around. Under the agreement, existing lenders will waive their claims in exchange for equity. Such restructurings are typically seen as a last resort to save a company from bankruptcy. Medallia operates in the customer experience management software space.
