Roketsan's TAYFUN Block-3 Missile Hits Moving Naval Target, Earns US Praise
Turkish defense company Roketsan successfully destroyed a moving unmanned surface target in the latest test launch of its TAYFUN Block-3 ballistic missile. The company and officials announced that this test marked the first integration of a domestically developed seeker head into a ballistic missile, enabling it to strike a moving naval target in the terminal phase. During the test, a free-moving unmanned vehicle representing a small fishing boat approximately 7 meters in length was hit with 'surgical precision' by a live warhead missile traveling at hypersonic terminal speed.
The US-based Defence Blog commented on Turkey's achievement, stating it had 'joined the ranks of elite countries.' The report emphasized that conventional ballistic missiles are designed to strike fixed coordinates, but hitting a moving warship requires far more complex technology. It noted that very few countries possess this capability, with China's DF-21D system being the most well-known example.
The TAYFUN missile was developed by Roketsan and the Presidency of Defense Industries based on the Bora ballistic missile. The first test launch took place on October 20, 2022, revealing the missile's existence to the public. A second test was successfully completed in May 2023, and serial production began the same month. In a third test off the coast of Rize in February 2025, a naval target hundreds of kilometers away was struck with approximately 5-meter accuracy.
The report also noted that Roketsan is working on a larger ballistic missile named CENK, developed entirely separately from the TAYFUN family. Analysis suggested that Turkey's development of an anti-ship ballistic missile is not only a technical achievement but could also have significant implications for regional security balances, and that fielding a missile capable of being launched from land to strike moving warships would enhance Turkey's deterrence capacity.

Technically, while the RSI is at 40 and the MACD is below the signal line, with the price trading below both the SMA20 and SMA50—indicating weak short-term momentum—the positive sentiment generated by the news may help break the current downtrend and trigger a short-term upward move. However, due to the weak technical structure, the upside remains at risk of being limited.
