IEA: Supply Security of Critical Minerals at Risk

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has announced that there are serious security risks in the supply of critical minerals. The agency stated that the concentration of production of these minerals in a few countries, potential export restrictions, and a decline in investments threaten supply security. According to the IEA report, the concentration of supply in specific countries for minerals vital to clean energy technologies, such as lithium, makes global supply chains fragile. This could lead to supply disruptions in the face of geopolitical tensions or changes in trade policies. Additionally, export restrictions that major producer countries might impose could increase price volatility at a time when demand for these minerals is rapidly rising. The decline in investments delays the implementation of new mining projects, bringing the risk of a long-term supply gap. The IEA emphasizes that governments and the private sector should take measures such as diversifying supply sources, promoting recycling, and building strategic stockpiles.
