Turkish Airlines Prepares $3 Billion Tender for 800 Aircraft Engines

Turkish Airlines (THY) has announced at the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) that it will soon launch a tender for the purchase of 800 aircraft engines. THY Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Murat Şeker stated that binding negotiations with engine manufacturers are underway and that the market value of the tender is between $2.5-3 billion. Şeker noted that the main reason for the delay in finalizing Boeing narrow-body aircraft orders is the uncertainty in engine selection. THY General Manager Ahmet Olmuştur shared details regarding engine suppliers. While negotiations with CFM continue for Boeing 737 Max aircraft, there are two alternatives for Airbus A321neo models: Pratt & Whitney and CFM. Additionally, Levent Konukcu announced that the engine maintenance center built in collaboration with Rolls-Royce for Airbus A350s will become operational in January 2028. Şeker emphasized that despite geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East, THY has outperformed last year in capacity increase and load factors. In the January-June period, capacity (ASK) increased by 5%, while cargo volume rose by 20%. He added that both passenger and cargo unit revenues have increased. Highlighting the impact of rising Brent oil prices on THY's costs, Şeker stated that every $10 increase in oil adds $100 million to monthly fuel costs. Cumulative fuel costs for 2026 are expected to reach $8.5 billion, reflecting an additional $2-2.5 billion in budget costs. In line with its strategic growth targets, THY plans to expand its fleet to over 800 aircraft by 2033. Within this scope, a contract has been signed with HAVELSAN for the supply of 12 new simulators. The agreement will increase the capacity of the simulator hangars, whose foundation will be laid in 2026 and first phase will become operational in 2027, as well as the new Flight Training Center to be completed in 2028.
