Extreme Heat Wipes Out EU Economic Growth Expectations
An analysis by Netherlands-based Triodos Bank has revealed that the extreme heatwaves and prolonged drought across Europe this summer will impose a significant financial burden on the European Union's economy. According to the study, these climate conditions are expected to cause approximately €180 billion in direct and indirect damages to the EU economy.
The magnitude of this damage is sufficient to completely erase the EU's projected economic growth rate for this year. Triodos Bank estimates that due to these losses, the EU economy will record no net growth this year, with current growth expectations being reset to zero.
The analysis highlights that rising temperatures have led to production losses in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and tourism, while infrastructure damage and increased healthcare spending have further amplified the economic burden. The prolonged drought, particularly by reducing agricultural yields, could push food prices higher and intensify inflationary pressures.
This situation could also affect the European Central Bank's monetary policy decisions. The halt in growth may complicate the balance between combating inflation and maintaining economic vitality. Experts note that climate-induced economic shocks may now occur more frequently and with greater severity, emphasizing that such risks should be incorporated into macroeconomic models.

This situation puts pressure on Europe-based exporters and supply chains, and may also spill over to emerging markets. In the short term, selling pressure in equity markets and increased demand for safe-haven assets may be observed. Turkish markets could also be affected by this negative external shock, experiencing increased volatility.
