China, Japan, and UK Reduce US Treasury Holdings

According to data released by the US Treasury Department, foreign investors' holdings of US Treasury securities fell by $72.1 billion in June to approximately $9.3 trillion. This decline signals weakening demand for US debt instruments in global markets. The largest impact came from position reductions by Japan and China. Both countries significantly reduced their US Treasury holdings, while the UK showed a similar trend. The combined sales from these three countries were the main driver behind the overall contraction in foreign investors' portfolios. Experts note that the sales are driven by diversification of foreign exchange reserves and shifts in interest rate expectations. In particular, the possibility of Japan tightening its own monetary policy is cited as a factor reducing interest in US Treasuries.
