Germany Establishes 'Drone Security Technology Center' Against Rising Drone Threats

Germany has opened a new center to enhance its capacity to combat drone-borne threats following the discovery of an explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at Leipzig Airport. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt inaugurated the Drone Security Technology Center at the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) Cochstedt site, emphasizing that this center would be a key component of the security architecture against 'hybrid threats.' The minister stated that capabilities to counter hostile drones would be strengthened. German authorities use the term 'hybrid warfare' to describe hostile actions beyond open military attacks, such as espionage, arson, and sabotage. According to federal police data, approximately 1,000 suspicious drone flights were detected over critical infrastructure in Germany last year. Dobrindt noted that the Leipzig incident was not an 'isolated case' but part of a larger threat picture. Leipzig/Halle Airport plays a critical role in transporting military supplies for the German armed forces and NATO allies. On the night of August 5, a drone equipped with explosives and detonators was found near an Antonov Airlines cargo aircraft and neutralized by a bomb disposal robot. The aircraft was reportedly carrying ammunition destined for Ukraine. German media reported that the drone struck the cargo plane's wing but did not detonate. While the investigation into the incident continues, German officials have avoided speculating on the identity of those responsible. However, some media outlets have suggested that DNA samples found on the drone may be linked to an arson attack in Lithuania. The European Union's judicial body Eurojust believes Russian military intelligence was behind the 2024 attacks.
