Dongfeng to Mass-Produce Solid-Liquid Battery with 1000 km Range

As the range race in the electric vehicle sector intensifies, Chinese automaker Dongfeng has clarified its timeline for next-generation battery technology promising a 1000-kilometer range. The company announced it will unveil its solid-liquid hybrid battery with an energy density of 350 Wh/kg in October and begin using it in mass-produced vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2026. This development is seen as a significant milestone in the race to eliminate range anxiety in electric vehicles. Dongfeng's new battery offers significantly higher energy density compared to current lithium-ion technologies. This allows more energy to be stored in the same weight and volume, potentially extending vehicle range to up to 1000 kilometers. The solid-liquid hybrid structure overcomes the production challenges of fully solid-state batteries while providing higher safety and energy density advantages over liquid electrolyte batteries. According to the company's statement, the transition to mass production of the battery will greatly reduce charging concerns in daily use of electric vehicles. The need to frequently search for charging stations during long-distance travel will be eliminated, enhancing the competitiveness of electric vehicles against gasoline-powered cars. Dongfeng's move could further intensify the global competition in the electric vehicle market, particularly regarding range. Experts note that the proliferation of such high-energy-density batteries could lower the total cost of electric vehicles and extend battery life. However, starting mass production and optimizing costs may take time.
