BDDK Eases Share Buybacks for Banks

The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) has introduced a significant regulation regarding share buybacks by publicly traded banks listed on Borsa Istanbul. The authority decided that buybacks executed after September 16, 2026, will not be considered as a deduction item from core capital until December 31, 2026. This decision will ensure that shares acquired by banks through buybacks are not reflected as a deduction in their core capital calculations. Consequently, such transactions will not have a negative impact on banks' capital adequacy ratios. Furthermore, the BDDK stated that repurchased shares will not be included in the calculation of amounts subject to credit and market risk. This regulation will not require banks to consider repurchased shares in their risk-weighted asset calculations. The decision covers the period between September 16, 2026, and December 31, 2026. The regulation allows publicly traded banks to conduct their share buyback programs more flexibly with respect to capital adequacy rules. Not investment advice.

The BDDK's facilitation of share buybacks for banks can be considered a short-term positive catalyst specifically for AKBNK. The stock has risen 7.98% in the last 24 hours, showing strong momentum, and closed above its 20-day moving average (67.98). The RSI is at 57, not yet approaching overbought territory, indicating there is still some room for upside. However, the MACD remains in negative territory and the 50-day average (70.60) may act as resistance; therefore, closes above 70.60 should be monitored for the sustainability of the rally. The impact of the news may be limited because the buyback facilitation does not directly change profitability, but rather provides a signal of liquidity and confidence.
