KLM Announces Restructuring Plan Under Global Pressures
KLM has announced that it will take measures affecting all its units due to global instability, high fuel prices, and increasing pressures in the aviation sector. The company aims to achieve a smaller, leaner, and more flexible structure as part of its restructuring plan.
Under the plan, some activities will be outsourced to external service providers, while others will be consolidated within Air France-KLM. It was stated that the number of positions within KLM will decrease by approximately 15 percent, and about 5,000 positions are being reorganized.
It was reported that the work corresponding to 1,250 positions in catering services has been carried out through a partnership with Gategroup since spring, and that activities covering approximately 800 positions in ground services will also be transferred to external companies. A total of 2,000 positions, including 1,500 positions at the customer contact center Cygnific, will be transferred to Air France-KLM, and approximately 1,000 positions at KLM will be reduced through efficiency gains.
The company stated that these measures will help increase revenues and further reduce structural costs, and said, "We need to make a big leap." It was noted that a permanent increase in productivity of at least 8 percent will be achieved by 2028, wage increases will be kept limited, and the measures aim to increase the company's annual earnings by 1 billion euros.
Changes will also be made to the fleet used on European flights; instead of the Airbus A320 aircraft planned to join the fleet, smaller Embraer E195-E2 aircraft will be preferred, and Boeing 737 and Embraer E190 aircraft will be gradually phased out of the fleet in the coming years.
Not investment advice.
The news indicates that global pressures continue in the aviation sector and companies are seeking restructuring; such statements generally create uncertainty across the industry. BA stock has risen 3.6% in the last 24 hours, and with an RSI of 58, it is far from overbought territory, while the MACD is slightly above its signal line, pointing to positive momentum. The price is trading above the SMA20 and SMA50, confirming a moderately positive short-term trend. However, since the news is not directly specific to BA, its impact may be limited and indirect. Therefore, in the 1-3 day outlook, a neutral course and the preservation of current technical momentum appear more likely.
KLM's restructuring plan indicates that cost pressures and global uncertainties continue in the aviation sector. Such news may cause short-term fluctuations in sector stocks, but its impact on the broader market may remain limited. While investors may increase risk perception specific to the company, no significant change in direction is expected at the macro level. Although its direct impact on Turkish markets is low, mild selling pressure may be seen in global aviation and tourism stocks.
